ULO cooling for an optimal storage climate
Comparing apples and pears? At D.J. Boer, we do it every day. And for good reason: the conditions under which fruit is stored at its best vary by fruit type and even by variety.
D.J. Boer’s cold storage facility has a total capacity of 5,000 tonnes, divided into storage cells ranging from 80 to 200 tonnes. Each cold storage cell is suitable for ULO cooling, a storage method in which the oxygen level is significantly reduced. This slows down the natural ripening process. As long as the fruit remains in cold storage, it is kept dormant and therefore in optimal condition.
Our cold storage facility is primarily designed for storing pears, as these place the highest demands on refrigerated storage. D.J. Boer is able to cool pears quickly to just below freezing point, which is essential. The facility is also suitable for all other types of fruit.
The temperature and oxygen level can be controlled separately in each cold storage cell. In addition, all units are equipped with a system that can humidify the product if required. With these facilities, we can provide the tailored solution you need. Naturally, climate control in our cold storage cells is fully computer-controlled. As an additional safeguard, we also personally check the temperature, oxygen level and other key values every day, allowing us to take immediate action in the event of any deviations or malfunctions.
Mechanical cooling for food and non-food products
In addition to apples and pears, there are of course many other food products that need to be stored under refrigerated conditions, but do not require specific climate-controlled conditions. Examples include fruit and vegetables such as chicory roots and citrus fruits, as well as food products such as butter and cheese. Non-food products that need to be kept cool can also be stored in our facility.
The cold storage facility is GlobalG.A.P. certified and therefore meets all hygiene requirements.
